B Corp Web Agency

As a B Corp Certified web agency, we can lift the initiatives and campaigns of our clients, helping their meaningful causes to thrive and deliver tangible, measurable impact.

We share B Lab’s belief that business should play a part in building positive systemic change. For a long time we’ve worked with organisations trying to do good things in the world – charities, ethical businesses and teams with good purpose at their core. For us, becoming a B Corp certified web agency was a great way to apply a meaningful and formal trust signal to reassure you that when it comes to people and planet, we walk the walk rather than just talking the talk. Being a B Corp means aligning with a globally recognised set of standards and keeps us accountable for the way we run our agency, not just the websites we produce.

What being a B Corp web agency means in practice

B Corp certification is a global standard for businesses that balance profit with people and planet. It isn’t about being perfect or claiming to have everything figured out. It’s about measuring what you do, being transparent about it, and committing to keep improving.

Going through certification meant looking closely at how we operate as a company: how we treat our team and suppliers, who we work with, how we make decisions, and how our work (both physical and digital) impacts the environment. It also means we’re reassessed regularly, so this isn’t a one-off badge. It’s an ongoing process that shapes how we work day to day.

We see design as a tool for positive change. A website can help an organisation reach the right people, explain what matters and move things forward. Done thoughtfully, it can also be lighter, more efficient and less resource-heavy. Being a certified B Corp web agency gives us a framework to keep pushing in that direction.

What makes a B Corp web agency different from other web agencies?

Our emissions are measured annually by an independent specialist and we publish the details in an annual impact report for full transparency. We also support clients who want to understand their website’s footprint or make more sustainable digital choices, whether that’s through energy-efficient website builds, better web hosting decisions or as part of a larger carbon reduction plan.

We don’t claim to have all the answers, we’re a small agency, still learning, still improving. B Corp gives us a structure to keep doing that with intention.

Answers to your B Corp Web Agency questions

What does it mean for a web design agency to be B Corp certified?

B Corp certification means an independent body (B Lab) has verified that a business meets high standards across its impact on workers, customers, community and the environment, not just its own claims. As a certified B Corp, Winter Design has been assessed and verified against those standards, not just self-declared.

How do you make a website low carbon?

A low carbon website is built to use less energy through lean code, optimised images, efficient hosting, and avoiding unnecessary scripts or auto-playing media. Every one of those choices reduces the data a browser has to load, which cuts both energy use and load time. Want to find out more about low carbon web design?

Does a low carbon website perform better in search rankings?

Yes, but indirectly. The same choices that reduce a website’s carbon footprint (smaller file sizes, faster load times, less bloat) are also what Google rewards in page speed and performance, which is a ranking factor. A leaner site tends to be both greener, faster and more accessible. Interested in buidling an accessible website?

How much CO2 does the average website produce?

The average web page produces around 0.36g of CO2 per page view, according to the Website Carbon Calculator by Wholegrain Digital. For a website with 10,000 monthly page views, that’s roughly 43kg of CO2 a year. Lighter, more efficient sites with optimised images and clean code can produce a fraction of that.

Is B Corp certification a reliable sign of a sustainable business?

It’s one of the more rigorous marks available — B Corp requires a minimum score on an independent assessment, a legal commitment to balance profit with purpose, and public transparency on performance. Whilst no ‘accreditation’ signs off a business as perfect, it means a business has been externally verified rather than just saying the right things.

Can I check how sustainable my current website is?

Yes – tools like Website Carbon Calculator and Ecograder give a free estimate of your site’s carbon footprint per page view, based on data transfer and hosting. It’s a useful starting point before any redesign.
